Installation & Fitting FAQs

Does a stair lift fit to the wall or the stairs?
Stair lifts are not expensive to run. They electricity stair lifts use are comparable to a DVD or Video player.
Can other people still use the stairs normally?
Modern stair lifts have a slim line design with seats, arm and foot rests that can be folded up when not in use. This leaves plenty of room for other stair users to walk up and down the stairs. Most stair lift models take up about 300mm in depth when the seat and footrest is up. For more information on specific stair lift dimensions please check the product.
How long does it take to install a straight stair lift?
It usually takes only 1-2 hours to fit a stair lift to straight stairs. The rail will be fitted first, then the motor and the seat. It will then be tested thoroughly and you will be shown how to use it by a stair lift engineer.
How long does it take to install a curved stairlift?
It usually takes about half a day for two stair lift engineers to fit a stair lift to curved staircase. The rail will be fitted first, then the motor and the seat. It will then be tested thoroughly and you will be shown how to use it by an engineer.
Do you need to remove the carpet on the stairs?
When installing your stailift, there is NO need to remove your carpet. The rail for the stairlift fits over the top of your carpet.
Will the handrail need to be removed?
In most cases the handrail is removed before the stair lift is fitted as it will no longer be required. In our opinion this looks neater than keeping the handrail, however in some cases the handrail can be left in place if required.
Does it require special wiring?
Stair lifts can be plugged into a standard 240v socket. However, access to a fused spur is preferred as a plug could accidentally be removed, switched off or knocked.
What if I have narrow stairs?
We stock a wide range of stair lift models to suit most staircase requirements. As part of a FREE no obligation survey, our stair lift engineers will recommend the most suitable stairlift for your requirements.
Do we need to have a power supply or is it run off a battery?
Our stair lifts are battery powered, but we will require an outlet either at the top or bottom of the stairs to keep it charged. Stair lifts can be plugged into a standard 240v socket. However, access to a fused spur is preferred as a plug could accidentally be removed, switched off or knocked.
Can I choose what colour my stair lift is?
Depending on the stair lift that you chose, many of them do come with a choice of seat fabrics. A sales engineer will be able to advise you accordingly.
Can anyone install a stairlift?
Stair lifts have to be installed according to strict British Safety Standards. All our engineers install stair lifts to these standards.
Are there any weight restrictions on the stairlifts?
This depends on the model, but most stair lifts have a weight limit of 18-21 stones. However, we can provide stairlifts that have a weight limit of up to 25 stone. Our stair lift engineers will be able to advise you accordingly.

Stairlift Usage FAQs

What happens if my partner has used the lift to go upstairs and I’m stuck downstairs?
All stair lifts come with remote controls. These can be mounted at the top and bottom of the stair lift. These can be very useful if more than one person in the house uses the stair lift. The stair lift remote control is extremely easy to use.
How noisy are they?
On average we would say that a stair lift is about as noisy as a microwave or dishwasher.
What happens if something is left on the stairs and gets in the way of the stair lift?
Stair lifts are extremely sensitive to foreign objects or obstructions left on a staircase. Stair lifts are fitted with multiple sensors that will automatically stop the stairlift if an object is in the way. Once the object is removed the stair lift can be operated as normal.
How easy is it to get on and off?
Stair lifts are fitted with either manual or powered swivel seats and heavy duty arm rests to aid you as you get on and off the stairlift. In some cases, a grab rail located on a wall or newel post can be fitted to provide further assistance/support.
How is a stair lift operated?
Stair lifts are operated by simple, large, up and down joystick located on the arms, which are designed to work with minimal pressure. Gently press the paddle in the direction of travel to start the stair lift. If you remove your hand from the joystick at any point, the stair lift will stop.
How fast will it go? I’m worried I’ll be frightened to use it.

What happens if my stair lift breaks down?
Every new stair lift comes with a 2 year comprehensive warranty and the first stair lift service is free. Reconditioned stairlifts come with a 12 month warranty.
What happens if we get a power cut? Will it stop halfway up the stairs?
As the stair lift is battery powered it will continue to work even if your home loses power. The battery will last long enough, without recharging, for your stair lift to complete between 10 and 15 journeys.
What warranty do I get with my stairlift?
Every new stair lift comes with a 2 year comprehensive warranty and the first stair lift service is free. Reconditioned stairlifts come with a 12 month warranty.
What happens if I no longer need my stairlift?
We cannot guarantee to buy stairlifts that were not installed by Norfolk Stairlifts as it will depend on the make, model and quality of the stairlift. However, if it is in a good state of order and can be reconditioned to meet our exacting standards of resale then we can help.
